LAHORE: As many as 13 documentaries and short films featuring social ills and humour were screened on Friday as part of thesis work of Beaconhouse National University (BNU) graduating students.

Of the 22 projects by graduating classes of MA in film and TV and BA (Hons) in theatre, film and TV, 13 films were showcased during the BNU Department of Theatre, Film and TV (TFT) thesis screening.

Students from various universities had been invited to screening of the thesis work at the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s (HRCP) office. Several film and television personalities, including Syed Noor, Ayyub Khawar, Ali Tahir, Faisal Bokhari and Chaudhry Ejaz Kamran, attended the event.

The first short film Dard-i-dil by Amar Ahsan was about an unorthodox friendship between an aged millionaire and a young girl. The plot covered complexities and social boundaries in an unlikely romantic relationship.

Another film Abdul Qudoos Jami by Salman Nafees was about a young struggling filmmaker who has to compromise his dreams and work as an accountant. The film showcases the struggle in a light- hearted manner.

A short film Chaap by Asad Ali was about child abuse. The story is about a man who had been sexually abused as a child. It depicts the effect of the abuse on his relationship with his son. He eventually finds peace with help from their family.

Head of Department Syed Urooj Samdani said the event had provided the graduates with a platform to showcase their work. “Usually students’ work is watched by a small group of people. We wanted to screen it before a large audience so that the students get good exposure,” he told The Express Tribune.

“We always want to motivate our students and exhibit their work,” Samdani said. He said 25 students from the University of Gujrat had been invited to the display.

Samdani said the idea behind inviting professionals was to provide guidance to the graduating students about to step in the mainstream world of film making. He said that such initiatives would help revive the country’s film industry.

Vice Chancellor Shahid Hafiz Kardar, School of Media and Mass Communication Dean Taimurul Hassan and faculty members, including Mujahid Mansoori, were also present.
