Younus believes amount of T20 cricket is detrimental to quality

Pakistani veteran middle-order batsman says players are now only focused on playing T20 leagues and earning well

Former Pakistan captain Younus Khan said on Wednesday that the amount of T20 cricket being played all over the year is decreasing the quality of players, eventually resulting in a decline in the quality of the game.

"Nowadays there are T20 leagues being played everywhere,” said Younus. “With so many leagues round the year, players are only focusing on this format and it is not good for Test or ODI cricket.”



"There has been a decline in the growth of quality players because of this,” he added.

The Pakistani veteran middle-order batsman expressed concern regarding players preferring to play in domestic T20 leagues all over the world which has a negative effect on the players.

"T20 cricket has been a big step forward for cricket but unfortunately it has been allowed unsupervised growth,” said Younus. “That has had negative effects on the players, many of whom now just think that just play T20 leagues and earn well.”



Further, the 38-year-old said the pitches used in the Test series between India and South Africa were sub-standard.

"I don't think it was a good advertisement for Test cricket in the recent India and South Africa series that the ball was turning from the first day onwards. The element of competition disappears on such pitches," Younus said while speaking to the Press Trust of India.

The highest run-scorer for Pakistan in the Test format also urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to invest more in domestic competitions.

"We should be in a situation where a domestic player is able to earn at least Rs40,000 to Rs50,000 per match," concluded Younus.
