ISLAMABAD: Parliamentarians, federal ministers, civil society members and others condemned the assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer by one of his bodyguards on Tuesday.

Insani Haqooq Ittehad, a network of civil society organisations of the twin cities also condemned the act. They described the incident as gruesome and inhuman.

However religious clerics, when approached for comments, remained tight-lipped on the assassination.

Federal ministers including Qamar Zaman Kaira, Naveed Qamar, Ahmed Mukhtar, Manzoor Wattoo, Senator Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari and Faisal Raza Abidi condemned the act during their visit to Polyclinic Hospital.

Bokhari lamented the fact that the governor was assassinated at the hands of his own bodyguard. He called it an unfortunate and cowardly act. He promised a thorough probe and said that the elements behind it would be brought to justice.

Social activist Farzana Bari blamed the government for Taseer’s assassination. Talking to The Express Tribune, she accused the party leaders of deserting him at a time when a propaganda campaign against him was underway.

Bari condemned the act, saying that the blasphemy law was man-made and overly misused. She called upon the government to take action against those who had issued a ‘fatwa’ against the governor, and instigated innocent people to take human lives. She also demanded heightened security for Sherry Rahman, who is facing similar threats.

Dr Abid Suleri, executive director of Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), called the incident “barbaric and against humanity.”

He said, “His death will add to political instability in the country, which could worsen the state of law and order. He was an important political figure and had been defending the proposed amendments to the blasphemy laws.”

He added that he believed Taseer died for the right cause and pledged SDPI’s support for liberal and progressive forces.

Some religious scholars remained tight-lipped when asked about their views, saying that the issue was too sensitive to be talked about. Professor Ibrahim of the Jamat-e-Islami and Mufti Muneeb, chairman of the Ruit-e-Hilal committee refused to talk when contacted for their comments, saying the issue was “too touchy.”

M Zafar Khan Safdar | 13 years ago | Reply What has happened to us, the heirs of so brilliant and magnificent a civilisation, the followers of greatest of all men, the Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW. What has caused the decline in our thoughts, culture, traditions, living, listening and thinking? Shame that we should waste our strength in conflicts of no value and in internecine tugs-of-war which have reduced the glory of Unity to an empty phoneme. The killing of Salman Taseer is nothing but another severe blow in the face of of Islam. Islam is being insulted in the name of Islam. Alhamdulliah, I am not only a staunch believer and a fundamentalist but an arrogant, supercilious Pathan and I believe in the fundamentals of this religion. Not only this, I never liked Salman Taseer for many many reasons but this does not allow me to pick a gun and shot anyone I dislike. Today we interpret islam in terms of its five pillars only, viz.: Tawhid, Salat, Siyam, Zakat and Hajj. The other important values of Islam such as: Diyanat, Sadaqat, Husn-e-Sulook, Ad’l and Ehsan have been brushed aside. Today, we attach great importance to imitate the outward aspects of the Holy Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) personality- such as keeping a beard, but do not give importance to practicing the teachings in his behavior and actions; such as, his humility, tolerance, patience, sacrifice, charity and many other beautiful characteristics and virtues. The killing of any human being is unacceptable in Islam, what to say of killing a Muslim. Islam never owed its power to guns, cannons and tanks and weapons but to the pre-eminence in thought amongst its Ulema, in character amongst its peoples and in following the guidance of Allah on the good road (for which we pray in the Fatihe 17 times a day), the road of justice, fellowship, brotherhood. I am not a religuios scholar but understands what Islam is and what we should do to become faithfuls. Our sources for living a life are the Qur’an and Sunnah e.g. “Allah commands justice and doing good and giving to relatives. And He forbids indecency and doing wrong and tyranny. He warns you so that hopefully you will pay heed” (Qur’an, 16:90). Islam is a combination of thought and action. The Qur’an repeatedly asks us to think, to reflect and ponder at the countless aspects of the natural phenomena. Allah not only reminds us of the process of human creation but, particularly, of the purpose behind it. I condem the killing of Salman Taseer, it was a cold blooded murder, we have become sick as a nation and intolerant and ill literate as a muslim. For GODs Sake donot insult Islam in the name of Islam, Do not abuse the teachings of Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW

So no one helped surround the governor nor they tried to stop the killer. This all shows that Police at higher level were involved in the murder.
