HYDERABAD:

The Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) conferred degrees on around 638 graduates at its annual convocation on Thursday. The graduates included 349 MBBS, 88 BDS, 78 postgraduates, 85 BSc Nursing and 38 BS Physiotherapy.

While addressing the ceremony, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah announced Rs300 million in financial support for LUMHS. “Our government has doubled the salaries for doctors and introduced a four-tier system for automatic promotions,” he said. “However, I urge doctors to work in smaller districts and rural areas for at least three to four years if they are appointed in the government service.”

He advised the students to prefer postings in their home districts, sharing his experience of how a shortage of doctors has deprived people of health facilities in rural and underdeveloped cities.

“It pains me to admit that we have no trauma centre in Sindh,” the CM said, promising that three centres will soon be established in Larkana, Sukkur and Hyderabad.

LUMHS vice-chancellor Dr Noshad Shaikh requested the CM to provide land along the Super Highway in Jamshoro for the construction of new LUMHS campuses. According to him, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia have shown interest in joint ventures in the proposed campuses.

Shah expressed his willingness to provide land for the proposed campuses but said he will have to consult Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and health minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed before giving his approval.
