HYDERABAD:

A bus carrying devotees to Sehwan toppled over on Indus Highway near the town of Sann, leaving 35 passengers, including 10 transgender people, injured.

All the injured were shifted to Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro, where six of them are said to be in a critical condition. The incident blocked traffic on the highway for over an hour.

Although the taluka municipal administration has prohibited swimming in the town's two canals under Section 144, no mechanism has been put in place to prevent accidents on Indus Highway. The 136-kilometre stretch of the highway between Jamshoro and Sehwan is known for the unusually high number of accidents that take place there due to its sharp curves.

The 762nd three-day urs celebrations of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar (RA) will commence in Sehwan on June 17. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad will inaugurate the urs. Tens of thousands of devotees, mostly from Sindh and Punjab, flood the small town of Sehwan during the urs celebrations.

The event will feature an international literary conference, a folk conference, traditional wrestling, horse racing and agricultural and industrial exhibitions.

Several provincial ministers will be present at these events, while Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah will attend the closing ceremony on June 19.

According to the Jamshoro SSP, 3,000 policemen and hundreds of Rangers personnel will perform security duty during the event. The town, as well as the roads leading towards it, witness dozens of casualties every year during this time, mainly due to deaths by drowning and road accidents.
