LAHORE:

After a long delay, Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz president Nawaz Sharif, officially launched the political campaign for NA-120 (Lahore-III), which her husband is scheduled to contest during next month’s elections. Kulsoom, along with hundreds of party workers, inaugurated the party’s office in NA-120 but left the venue without speaking a single word.

A PML-N official said that the party had fielded Kulsoom Nawaz for two reasons: she commands respect among Lahori voters,  and second that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf has fielded Dr Yasmeen Rashid against Nawaz Sharif and Kulsoom can counter PTI’s female contestant. Kulsoom had launched a movement for the release of her husband after the October 12, 1999 military coup by the then army chief Pervez Musharraf.
