BAHAWALPUR: Dozens of residents of Chak 78/P staged a demonstration on Saturday to protest the murder of a woman allegedly at the hands of her husband, father-in-law and brother-in-law over borrowed jewellery.

They gathered in front of Saddar police station and chanted slogans urging police to take action against the suspects. They placed the body at the gates of the police station and called on the DCO to take notice of the killing.

Sarunji, father of the deceased, told newsmen that his daughter Sabi Mai had married Peruji, a resident of Rasoolpur, four years ago. He said the couple had two children. He said her husband had borrowed her jewellery, which included two tolas silver and two tolas gold.

He said on Friday, she had asked him to return the jewellery.

“First they argued and then Peerojee, his father Cheenaji and his brother Krishan started beating her. Later, they forced her to swallow poison.”

“We moved a complaint against the suspects but police are not arresting them,” he said.

Talking to The Express Tribune, a Saddar police spokesman said an FIR had been registered.

“The body was taken to a morgue for autopsy,” he said. “We are waiting for its report before we make arrests.”

He said a team had been formed to investigate the matter.

Separately, an FIR was registered against a man for killing his wife for honour. A police spokesman said the complaint was moved by Basheer Ahmed, father of the deceased. He said Ahmed had told them that Nawaz, his son-in-law, had attacked his daughter with an axe after accusing her of having an affair. He said the couple had married a few years ago and lived in Chak 163/P. The spokesman said a team had been formed to arrest the suspect. Separately, a woman was shot dead by her husband on Saturday.

A police spokesman said Nadeem, a resident of Ahmadpur East, had married Aasia Bibi a month ago. He said the couple did not get along and the woman returned to her parent’s house a few days ago.

He said Nadeem had visited her on Saturday with his friend Farooq Ahmad to persuade her to return. He said when she refused, the men shot her dead and fled.

He said Saddar police had taken the body to the tehsil headquarters hospital for post mortem examination. He said a team had been formed to investigate the killing.
