LG Elections: Govt asks ECP for army deployment

Around 7,400 cops will be deployed in various areas of Karachi for election duty

KARACHI: The Sindh government has formally requested the Election Commission of Pakistan to deploy the army during the upcoming local government elections on December 5 in a letter addressed to the chief election commissioner in Islamabad. Officials said that the government is finalising its security plan, which will be shared with the election commission soon. “Around 7,400 cops will be deployed in various areas of Karachi for election duty,” said an official, adding that the army has been asked to provide at least 10 companies. “The Sindh government has not yet shared the security plan with us and has yet to give us a list of sensitive polling stations,” provincial election commissioner Tanveer Zaki.
