HARIPUR: NGO Alif Ailaan urged tehsil council members to give top priority to education to strengthen the school system and increase enrolment and literacy rates in the district. Zahid Kazmi, district coordinator for Alif Ailaan, insisted problems relating to student enrolment numbers and school facilities could be resolved at the union council level. “The local government system is the best form of governance since power is devolved to the lower levels,” said Kazmi. He also said that elected LG members have strong linkages at the grass-roots level and enjoy a unique rapport with their voters. According to Kazmi, “This will help elected members convince others to support the drive to achieve the targeted enrolment based on a study conducted by Alif Ailaan. Appreciating the work of the NGO, tehsil nazim Tariq Khan assured all resources would be utilised to increase enrolment.
