Imran divorced Reham over text amid furious rows: report

Published: November 8, 2015

Even after its end, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan’s marriage is surrounded with as much controversy as it began with.

The cricketer-turned-politician announced his divorce to TV journalist Reham Khan last week in a move as unexpected as his marriage was and now speculations are rife as to why they both agreed to divorce just 10 months into the relationship.

According to British newspaper, Daily Mail, the marriage disintegrated “amid furious rows over everything from his friends to her attempts to ban his dogs from the bedroom.”

Imran, Reham announce divorce after 10 months of marriage

Although both Imran and Reham insist they parted amicably and with mutual consent, a source told the Daily Mail that the marriage finally ended when Imran texted ‘talaq’ three times to Reham. The text is said to have been followed by a brief email.

Reham, who received the message as she stepped off a plane that had taken her from Pakistan to Birmingham, is believed to have also received a confirmation call from Imran’s chief of staff.

The source said, Imran’s decision to divorce Reham in such a manner was an attempt to counter any fightback from her. “I don’t think she would have left the house if she had any inkling that it was on the cards,” the source added.

The report added, a shaken Reham was met by senior officials of PTI and driven to London, where one of Imran’s closest confidants began negotiating a financial settlement to annul the brief marriage.

Reports of Reham hitting Imran are absolute lies: PTI

Millionaire businessman Zulfi Bukhari met Reham at a hotel near Knightsbridge for over three hours before the pair drove off in his gleaming Bentley, according to the report. Bukhari has confirmed that “negotiations are still ongoing”.

Imran and Reham married in a low-key ceremony at his Bani Gala residence in January this year. However, insiders, say the divorced mother of three immediately set about taking over Imran’s hilltop house, telling friends it had been an “unruly and ill-disciplined household”.

Her first major change, it is alleged, was to throw Imran’s beloved pet dogs from his bedroom. “They were no longer allowed to sleep in their master’s inner sanctum or even be there during the daytime,” another source told the British newspaper. “Imran was upset when she had them shifted to a room outside the house and refused to budge despite his pleas,” the source added.

‘Century with partner’ comment taken out of context: Reham

Further, the source continued, “Then the house was re-arranged to suit the needs of Reham’s youngest daughter who lived there, as well as the elder daughter and son, who often visited. Members of Reham’s family pretty much came and went as they pleased. On the other hand, Imran Khan’s nephews and nieces were made to feel unwelcome.”

The paper quoted a family insider as saying, “Their home became a battleground because Reham was determined to control every aspect of Imran’s life.”

“She made his life a living hell. The wonder is that things dragged on for as long as they did. They argued over his habit of sharing his bedroom with his dogs, and her jealousy over his continued close relationship with Jemima Goldsmith, his ex-wife and the mother of his two sons,” the family source added.

Further, Imran’s sisters who opposed his marriage to the TV journalist from the start refused to visit for as long as she was there.

Reham also divided opinion on the public stage and upset party members with her ambition for a leading role in party politics.

Imran Khan shuts down reporter who enquired about divorce with Reham

One party insider said, “It reached the stage where Imran was facing open revolt from his financial backers and party faithful.”

“He realised that the public obsession with what Reham was eating, cooking and wearing was deflecting from the political message.”

“She was becoming bigger news than him,” the party insider said.

On Saturday, Reham formally announced that divorce papers have been signed by her with her former husband. Contradicting the Daily Mail’s report, Reham said, “With a heavy heart we both decided before I left for England that it was best to part ways so our work commitments were not affected by our personal problems.”

During the announcement, Reham ruled out rumours of any agreement of a financial settlement as false. “It is unfortunate and condemnable how media has been indulging in unbecoming behavior and language,” she said.

“Media started with speculation and followed with serious accusations without evidence. The quest for ratings and the misogynistic witch hunt is shameful and I plan to campaign actively for a media ethics board monitoring all output,” she added.

No Bhabi No’: Twitter reacts to #ImranRehamdivorce

Further, she said the reason for the divorce was “a breakdown in the relationship”.

She also rejected allegations that she had received Rs50 million from PTI leader Aleem Khan and Rs80 million from Faisal Wada, another leader of the PTI. The TV journalist said that the allegation of physical violence was “not only pure fiction but ludicrous”.

“The allegations of anyone poisoning Imran Khan are not based on fact and no stomach washing was ever carried out,” she said.

“Divorce is a painful experience and we would appreciate sensitivity and understanding from the media for both of us and our children at this difficult time. A malicious campaign against me and my children for over a year has driven us to this decision. I hope that now me and my children will be left alone to rebuild our lives,” Reham added.

Since the start of their marriage, Reham made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Soon after the couple married, Reham’s ex-husband, NHS psychiatrist Dr Ijaz Rehman strongly denied allegations he had mistreated her during their marriage. Further, Dr Rehman claimed she used him “like toilet paper to clean up her image” after she found herself harshly criticised by traditionalists in Pakistan who saw Imran’s bride as far too Westernised.

Reham will neither contest elections on PTI ticket nor attend party events: Imran

Further, months after their marriage, it was found that Reham had not attended the Lincolnshire college as she had claimed on her personal website. She said she studied journalism at ‘North Lindsay College’ in Scunthorpe.

The PTI chairman and TV journalist confirmed their split on Twitter.

What she was trying to do at home is a traditional role for an eastern wife. Whats wrong with asking that he keeps his dogs away from the bedroom? And keep a dsitance from his ex wife? Seems to me that IK has more contradictions in his life .Whiel projecting the image of a strict muslim , he engaes in practices otherwise.

But why complain about the media when you yourself were too happy in allowing them into your home and kitchen. When you record a flirtatious interview with your husband and too happy to hint at your strong influnce on him have in public meetings. you cliam to be a national bhabhi and say that Mr. Khan will have tough time at home if he doesnt meet peoples aspirations.

    I believe the Daily Mail.
    1) Did they also not break the story of Reham not attending Lincolnshire as claimed?
    2) Why is Zulfi Bokhari there if not to give her money to shut up about the drugs imran uses?
    3) I was made to feel unwelcome at Bani Gala tooRecommend

Very very unfortunate for us as a nation following these big names. Such high stature and noted personalities, even in their mature ages and with lifetime of experience are still incapable to plan and align their ambitions and their personal life.
Serious question marks on both of them, specially when both got a second chance to improve personal life, the kids from earlier marriages getting affected from their decisions and a whole lot of nation following them as their heroes.Recommend

I don’t think Ms Reham at any point in their brief matrimony became a larger news than IK’s politics and personage . His larger than life personality and his unique politics is too big to withstand many such “Reham” tremors in his life but I sincerely pray and hope he gets the peace of mind and heart he deserves and requires to play the role he must for Pakistan with or without any more Jemimas or Rehams Recommend

Personality background of both husband and wife matters to become successful life partners. The Muslims specially Pakistanies can never become liberal because of their personality background. The same case is with Indian non Muslims. These two societies however may learn to pretend as liberal to achieve some goals. Their inner personality, however, does not change at all. So better they should be very much careful while selecting their life partners. A careless selection might be painful for both of them. Misjudgement of ground reality is the second major reason for divorces. Therefore the comprise policy always gives hopeless results. Same thing happened with Mr Imran Khan and his ex wives. Why didn’t both agreed upon on number of things before marriage e.g. rights, responsibilities, duties and limits. Who would come home and who wouldn’t? How much Reham would interfere in politics and how much role couple’s children would play. Both were educated and experienced but final result has shown that education, previous experiences and world travel has not made any difference on their personalities. When we were almost agreed not to interfere in their privacy, one of them is leaking secrets to public. Its not a secret that Imran has agreed to pay Rs.8 crores to PTI’s ex. Bhabhi. Why Imran has agreed to pay her such a huge amount and that too for just 10 months of his troubled married life? The answer is simple. Reham knows too much. He would pay this large sum in installments, which means that if Reham goes public and exposes him, she would not get the remaining amount. Reham on hand is scaring him with disclosure of small incidents and warning him about bigger events to secure next installment. Recommend

I was taking Imran side early. Now I don’t see she asked for anything unusual. In traditional Marriages Husband’s old friends & relatives are always in the chopping block. Dogs must go…too. What happened? Imran, sadly but understandably had No Time to work on it. Neither did IK friends & relatives wanted to loose or share him, Period. Reham could have been wiser too and waited, but she was a successful professional & Western educated woman with three kids. Not a wait-and-see woman. That’s getting obsolete already. You have to Win-his-Heart 100% to kill his dogs, relatives, friends, freedom of thoughts, simply old FREE lifestyle. Now we see… IK didn’t think it through. A Typical Lover Boy!Recommend

Reham’s separation was more than her being ambitious, breaking the stereotype or being very visible.

What was objectionable was her taking away her husband’s freedom, trying to separate him from his established relationships, trying to control his ways of life that he was used to…and last but not the least, she was beginning to destroy the assets Imran had so laboriously built. When Reham was going to climb her politicla career ladder on Imran’s back, she should have taken the basic precaution to make sure Imran was not pained and actually comfortable. But she was being selfish..she really did not care that much about Imran….it was this that Imran realized…the trust was broken..imran felt betrayed….Imran therefore did the right thing.Recommend
