Up in arms: Protesters demand enforcement of safety standards

Protestors also demanded the resignation of Labour Minister Raja Ashfaq Sarwar

LAHORE:

“Wednesday’s factory collapse in Sundar points towards a nationwide dearth of effective implementation of all laws related to labour,” Awami Workers’ Party general secretary Farooq Tariq said on Friday. He was speaking at a demonstration held at Charing Cross. He said minors had been working in the factory. He asserted that the building had collapsed because the Labour Department had failed to inspect it. Tariq said it was crucial for all facilities to be inspected on a monthly basis. The AWP called for the kin of every deceased worker to be awarded Rs30 million compensation.

The party demanded Labour Department officials tasked with overseeing affairs at Sundar Industrial Estate to be immediately suspended. It also demanded the resignation of Labour Minister Raja Ashfaq Sarwar.
