Afghanistan coaching: Inzamam rubbishes contract extension talks

Former Pakistan skipper recently trained the side for a month against Zimbabwe

KARACHI: Former captain Inzamamul Haq has denied reports suggesting that an agreement between him and the Afghanistan cricket team over a two-year extension in his coaching contract has been finalised. 

In his one-month tenure, Inzamam helped Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe in both the one-day and T20I series to give the country its first series win against a Test-playing nation.

The 45-year-old said that although he had enjoyed his short stint with the Afghan side, there was no truth in the rumours.



“There is no truth in the reports saying that I’ve agreed to coach Afghanistan for the next two years,” Inzamam told The Express Tribune. “Let people say and write what they want, you can’t control that. But what I can do is confirm that no such contract has been signed. I enjoyed working with the Afghanistan team for a month’s time and that’s it.”

Popularly known as ‘Inzi’, the former middle-order batsman added that he is slowly testing waters in the coaching department and wanted to analyse how this new chapter in his life went before pursuing dreams of coaching Pakistan in the future.

Inzamam played 120 Tests for Pakistan, scoring 8,830 runs at an average of 49.60 with 25 centuries and 46 fifties and also enjoyed a phenomenal ODI career, amassing 11,739 runs in 378 matches at an average of 39.52 with 10 tons and 83 half-centuries.
