Google has launched an app titled ‘Who’s down’, which helps you easily connect with friends that are free to meet up.

The invite-only app, which is available for free download, lets nearby friends see your status and gives them an option to join you.

To show yourself as available, you can use the sliding feature that makes you available for three hours. To make it more personalised, the app also gives you the option to create your own activity or select one from a list of popular things to do in your area.

In order to help organise an event with your friends, there are also group chatting features in the app that make communication easier.

“We're not down to share more details just yet,” Google announced.

The new app is similar to Apple's Find My Friends tool and Foursquare's Swarm app, apart from the feature that enables the user to say exactly what they are “down” for.

Earlier this year, Apple patents announced it would add some new features to its app like introducing customisable notifications that alert friends when you leave or arrive at a certain location, and lets them track your route more accurately.

A related filing uses 'nodes' inside buildings to help these users pinpoint your exact location even when you are indoors.

The patents introduced this feature by using existing technology known as geofencing to create a virtual fence or barrier around a specific location.

The tracking feature can only be used through users’ permission to be tracked. Once consent is given, the initial user can request to see their location and get location-based alerts that notify them when, for instance, they arrive at an airport, or when a child leaves school.
