City’s crime shows marked decrease

PESHAWAR:

Ten-month data for the Peshawar district shows a decline in the crime rate compared to previous years, says the police.

The numbers

Around 376 people were killed and 508 injured in murder and attempted murder cases. Another 424 people were injured in other cases that surfaced during this period. At least 15 people were kidnapped for ransom, 43 women were abducted for marriage and 35 were kidnapped in cases related to various disputes. Five children were also reported to have been kidnapped. There were 15 cases of adultery also reported.

There were 54 attacks on police personnel and 20 targeted killings of common citizens. Also, 170 cases of theft and another 77 cases of burglary were reported. The number of car-lifting cases also decreased. A total of 75 cars were lifted and 15 were snatched at gunpoint. Moreover, 102 bikes were stolen and there were 42 attempted snatchings.

Some 85 road accidents in the district proved fatal while 313 were non-fatal. Around 964 people were jailed for rash driving.

Police view

Talking to The Express Tribune, an official of the police said, “With a decline in militancy and diligence on part of police force, the crime rate has fallen considerably compared to previous years.” He added that although a lot still needs to be done, the figures showed a marked improvement in the overall situation. “Policing in most parts of the district was limited to manning countless checkpoints established across the city and police stations had very little manpower left to chase after criminals,” he said.
