LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s candidates for chairman and vice chairman in Union Council 128 are former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz men. They say they are committed to the people of the area and will do their best to solve their problems.

However, residents of the area say the problems are many. For one, there is no tubewell in the area and residents say they don’t have access to safe drinking water. An unreliable and intermittent gas supply is another standing issue. “We don’t have gas supply for nine months in a year,” a resident explains. There are no street lights so higher incidence of street crime is reported here, they say.

UC 128 has traditionally been a PML-N stronghold.

The chairman candidate for the PML-N is Mian Kalim Raza, a property dealer, and has been elected as nazim of the area in 2001 and 2005. The candidate for vice chairman Mehar Tayyab is also a property dealer and is contesting elections for the first time.

They say they have worked day and night to serve the people of the area and resolve to serve them with renewed vigour after they win. The key issues on their agenda are access to safe drinking water, ensuring regular gas supply, street-lights and an upgraded sewerage system.

PTI candidate for chairman Mehar Muhammad Shahid Heera is a landlord. He was previously elected councillor three terms on the PML-N ticket. PTI’s vice chairman candidate Mian Sadaqat Majeed is a property dealer and has been elected councillor previously from the PML-N platform. They, too, have the same agenda the PML-N candidates have.

The total number of registered voters in the area is 13,829. Prominent areas in this UC are Hazrat Madhu Laal Hussain Shrine, Fazal Elahi Park, Mohalla Madhu Laal Hussain, Talaab Wali Masjid, Mohalla Dhobiyan, Mohalla Fazal Shah and Bhogewal.
