Pakistan loses UNHRC re-election bid
UN General Assembly elects 18 states to serve on 47-member body for three-year terms beginning on January 1, 2016

Pakistan failed to win a re-election to the top United Nations human rights body, garnering just 105 votes in the 193-member General Assembly.
Pakistan’s current term ends on December 31, 2015. It lost the seat in the Asia-Pacific category in which five seats were vacant, according to a statement issued by the UN.

The UN General Assembly through a secret ballot elected 18 states to serve on the 47-member UN Human Rights Council for three-year terms beginning on January 1, 2016.
United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea and the Philippines were elected from the Asia-Pacific region, while Laos was the other country that lost.
The elected countries which will start their terms beginning January 1, 2016 include Belgium, Burundi, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Georgia, Germany, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Panama, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Slovenia, Switzerland, Togo, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.

India is a member of the Council and was re-elected last year to second term on the Council. It’s term will end in 2017. Members of the Council serve for three years and are not eligible for immediate re-election after serving two consecutive terms.
