“A Khokhar is going to be elected irrespective of whichever way the election swings,” a PML-N worker remarked to The Express Tribune while sharing his opinion about the forthcoming contest. The aforementioned candidates are also distantly related to each other. PML-N activists said the only difference between the PTI and PML-N was that of ideology. They said they were running their election campaign on the basis of development work carried out by the government.
The activists said “their cousins” had no strong argument as the government had been doing a splendid job. They said the results of the election would vindicate their stance.
PTI activists expressed similar sentiments for their rivals. “They are from our biradri. We are on good terms with them but we are against the government’s corrupt practices,” they said. The activists said the residents of the locality would reject the PML-N due to the government’s dismal performance.
The aspiring chairmen of both parties are related to political heavyweights. Malik Nisar Khokhar, the PML-N’s candidate for the UC’s chairmanship is a nephew of MNA Afzal Khokhar. Malik Imran Omer, the PTI’s candidate for the UC’s chairmanship, is a nephew of veteran politician and former MPA Malik Karamat Khokhar.
In addition to hailing from the same community and being related to political heavyweights, both the candidates are real estate consultants, which they opine, gives them an edge when it comes to canvassing for support. Both parties have been striving to obtain the support of the Khokhar biradri which constitutes a significant portion of the total number of registered voters in the UC with rival workers claiming that the community is behind their respective parties.
