PDMA issues alert over surging river levels

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) warned of rising river levels and urged residents of vulnerable areas to move to safe ground on Tuesday.

According to an issued an updated flood report, the Indus River is experiencing varying flood intensities. At Tarbela, a low-level flood was recorded with water flow at 309,000 cusecs, while Kalabagh registered medium flood at 440,000 cusecs. At Chashma, the river flow reached 492,000 cusecs under medium flood conditions, and Taunsa recorded 489,000 cusecs at the same level.

The Ravi River at Shahdara remained at a normal flow of 36,000 cusecs.

Authorities cautioned that the Ravi could experience low- to medium flooding in the next 24 hours.

The Sutlej River showed low flood levels at Ganda Singh Wala and Sulemanki, with flows of 64,000 and 71,000 cusecs, respectively.

Seasonal streams also experienced low flood conditions, with officials warning that continued heavy rains could increase water levels.

The PDMA director general instructed residents living along riverbanks to evacuate immediately.

Meteorologists said isolated rain is expected in parts of Punjab over the next two days.
