Death penalty: Murder convict hanged

Jail officials say mercy appeals, sent to the High Court, the Supreme Court and the president, had been rejected

DERA GHAZI KHAN:

A murder convict was executed at Dera Ghazi Khan Central Jail on Wednesday.

Rana Muhammad Aslam had killed his wife Musarrat Bibi in Rajanpur on June 6, 1996.

Jail officials said all mercy appeals, sent to the High Court, the Supreme Court and the president, had been rejected.

Attempts for reconciliation with the plaintiff had also failed. A district and sessions court issued death warrants for Aslam on Monday and he was hanged on Wednesday at 5:30am.

Aslam was allowed to meet his family for the last time on Tuesday.

His brother Khadim Hussain told The Express Tribune that his brother was innocent.

He said they had tried their best to settle the matter with Rana Muhammad Ashraf, the complainant in the case, but he had turned them away.
