Two suspects involved in Godil attack arrested

The Sindh cabinet was informed on Tuesday that the police have arrested two suspects involved in the attack on Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) lawmaker Abdul Rashid Godil, who got severely injured on August 18 when unknown motorcyclists opened fire on his car near his residence in Karachi.
Briefing a cabinet meeting, chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Hyder Jamali said, “We have arrested two accused – one from Hyderabad and another from Karachi.”
He said he would give a detailed briefing on the case within a few days as some more arrests were expected soon. There are reports that the arrested suspects belong to a political party; however, the official sources and police did not confirm these reports.

Talking with reference to the security arrangement for the first phase of upcoming local government elections in Sindh, the IGP said against the requirement of 11,850 policemen a force of 5,425 policemen was currently available.
The CM directed him to cover the shortfall of 6,425 policemen from training centres and other ranges. Jamali told the cabinet that Rs82.2 million were also required for making security arrangements during the LG polls.
He said for ensuring security during Muharram, Rs102 million were required – including Rs24.9 million for fuel, Rs10 million for hiring walk-through gates and CCTV cameras, Rs5 million for purchase of miscellaneous items such as megaphones and tents and Rs62.5 million as feeding charges.
The finance minister proposed that the financial requirement can be curtailed if the CCTV cameras of IT department were obtained. The vehicles requirement could also be met by borrowing transport from other government departments. “However, I would assess the requirements when summary is received,” he said.
He told the cabinet that army chief General Raheel Sharif has provided 500 bulletproof jackets to Sindh police for which the chief minister thanked General Raheel.

Sensitive polling stations
The IGP Ghulam Hyder Jamali said in the first phase of the LG election 865 constituencies have been declared most sensitive, of which 463 are in Sukkur and 402 in Larkana divisions. In these constituencies, 8,650 policemen would be deployed. Apart from it, on 1,382 sensitive constituencies 11,056 policemen would perform their duty.
Loss due to wheat import
The cabinet decided that the 1.5 million tons of wheat lying in its go-downs would be sold in the local market till its prices are stablised in the international market for export. The CM noted that the federal government caused Sindh a huge loss by allowing import of wheat.
“Now, we are caught in a difficult situation and facing a huge monetary loss,” he said.
