After man lynched for ‘eating beef', Hindus come together to celebrate Muslim weddings

Hindu villagers have ensured security for the Muslim family celebrating the marriage

Hindu residents of a village in India where a Muslim man was lynched for rumours that he had consumed beef, are joining their Muslim neighbours in making preparations for two Muslim weddings.

Hakeem, a resident of Bishada, Dadri, had earlier been mulling over shifting the wedding venue outside the village after 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was beaten to death over rumours that he and his family had consumed beef. Akhlaq’s 22-year-old son Danish was critically injured by the mob which barged into their house on the night of September 28.

However, Hakeem has now decided to hold the wedding in the village after Hindu villagers ensured security for the family celebrating the marriage today (Sunday). Hindu families are all set to welcome the bridegrooms and their families and are busy making preparations for food and tent.

Further, the victim’s son Danish was yesterday shifted to Army’s Research and Referral (R&R) hospital in the national capital. The 22-year-old was previously being treated for the past 12 days at the Noida’s Kailash Hospital.

“Danish has recovered well and is able to walk and move about. He is being essentially shifted for rest and rehabilitation,” Dr Anil Gurnani of Kailash Hospital said.

“He was able to recognise (people) and also walk with support. He has eaten food as prescribed by doctors,” confirmed Irfan, son of Akhlaq’s elder brother, Jamil.

Earlier, state minister Azam Khan had sent an ambulance to shift Danish to a Ghaziabad hospital but his family had declined due to his critical condition.

Hashmi | 8 years ago | Reply It is nice to know that in order to undo the harm to community relations done by some extremist Hindus, other Hindus have decided to facilitate and participate in two Muslim weddings, and are actively helping the Muslim families in making the arrangements. Just before moving to Pakistan in 1947, I spent my early childhood in a part of India where there were no religious or other tensions. And even though people of different religions followed their religion strictly, this did not stop them from living together peacefully and mixing socially. I remember we Muslim boys used to be given front seats by Hindus in Ram Leela Nataks and we played holi with them while Hindus greeted and visited on Eid and other occasions. We have got to remember that one cannot be a good Muslim or a good Hindu, without being a good human being first, and this applies not only to Islam and Hinduism but to all religions. Karachi

pk | 8 years ago | Reply This is beauty of Indian democracy, it is always in autocorrection mode by the will of people not by the law. There are hundreds of secular Hindus against one extremist Hindu. But there is none in front of extremists.
