SUKKUR:
Despite a lapse of three days, the Shikarpur police are no closer to arresting the culprit involved in the torture and killing of a TV mechanic.

Saleem Kamangar a was forcibly taken to Lakhidar police station the night before Eid and was killed allegedly after being tortured. On Thursday night, CIA official Imdad alias Commando Brohi, along two police constables of Lakhidar police station, Qaim Ali Shah and Dadan Jalbani, raided Kamangar's shop in Bhittai Bazaar.

Naseer Hakro, Kamangar's son-in-law, told The Express Tribune that two weeks ago Brohi had purchased a remote control from Kamangar's shop for Rs150 and Kamangar had made it clear to him that there was no warranty on the device. On Thursday night, Brohi came to the shop with a complaint that the remote control was not working and, after some argument, Kamangar returned the Rs150 and asked him to purchase another device from some other shop. But the CIA official, in spite of taking back his money, threatened him, said Hakro.

Soon after that, Brohi contacted the policemen at Lakhidar police station, who came to the shop and dragged Kamangar away, he added. After taking him to the police station, the policemen mercilessly tortured and humiliated Kamangar, due to which he suffered a heart attack, said Hakro.

In the meantime, two office bearers of the Small Traders Association arrived at the police station and requested Kamangar's release. After the policemen let Kamangar out of the lock-up, he was immediately rushed to the hospital where he died within 10 minutes.

Later both the policemen, Qaim Ali Shah and Dadan Jalbani, were arrested but Brohi has yet to be arrested.

"The police are ready to lodge an FIR against the arrested officials but we want them to arrest Imdad Brohi, who is the key culprit, after which we will lodge an FIR," said Hakro.

A social activist in Shikarpur, Naveed Alam Abro, condemned Kamangar's torture and murder. Despite repeated attempts, The Express Tribune failed to contact Shikarpur SSP Nasir Aftab. Lakhidar SHO Bashir Khokhar said that the two policemen who tortured Kamangar to death are already under arrest, while raids are being conducted to arrest Brohi.
