KARACHI: The Rangers informed an anti-terrorism court on Wednesday about the 90-day preventive detention of a political worker allegedly involved in the May 12 carnage and the killing of an MPA.

The suspect, identified as Ashiq Hussain, said to be a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, has been accused of killing more than 15 people during the May 12, 2007 riots, according to the Rangers.

Around 40 people were killed, while hundreds were injured in the May 12 riots that broke out in the city as the then deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry landed in Karachi.

During the initial interrogation, Hussain also confessed to his involvement in the killing of MQM lawmaker Manzar Imam, the law officer added. Imam was gunned down, along with three of his guards, in January 2013 in Orangi Town.

The Rangers submitted the detention order issued by their sector commander and jail warrants for the suspect to the ATC-II, contending that they had ‘credible information’ for his involvement in targeted killings, extortion, kidnapping and other acts of terrorism. The paramilitary force contended that it was in public interest that an inquiry be launched against the suspect and he be grilled for three months.

Separately, the same court remanded another suspect, also belonging to the MQM, to police custody for 14 days on accusations of killing two Rangers personnel two years ago. The bodies of Rangers’ officers, Munir Ahmed Bhutto and Ejaz Ahmed Baloch, were found near the Mewa Shah Graveyard in March 2013 bearing marks of torture.
