KARACHI:

A group of armed bandits robbed the branch of a private bank in the outskirts of the metropolis on Tuesday.

Eight robbers barged into the branch of Summit Bank, located in Baldia Town within the limits of Madina Colony police station in the morning, and held the staff hostage at gunpoint.

Police officials and witnesses said that the robbers arrived in a car and two motorcycles and first snatched the guns from the security guards and held them hostage. The robbers looted around Rs2.2 million, including foreign currency and jewellery, from the bank.

SHO Chaudhry Aslam said that the robbers were already present outside the bank before it opened for business. He added that six of the armed men entered the bank, while two stayed outside.  The officer said that the robbers did not take the close-circuit cameras with them while fleeing. Aslam added that the police detained two security guards for questioning over their possible involvement in the robbery. A case was registered and further investigation was underway, he said.
