KARACHI: Contenders of the Democrats panel won all 12 seats — five officebearers and seven governing-body seats — in the Karachi press club elections, for which members came out in the hundreds to vote in the new body on Saturday.

Tahir Hasan Khan (The News) won the presidency, while Musa Kaleem (Herald) was elected as secretary. Meanwhile, Fazil Jamili (Jang) was won the vice presidency and Anwer Khan (ARY) won the position of treasurer. Muhammad Arif (Awam) was elected as joint secretary.

Seven members elected for the governing body included: Asif Jiaja, Shams Keerio, Ghazala Fasih, Shakeel Silawat, Noman Rafiq, Shahzad Shah Jillani and Hamid Nazeer.

Voters were greeted amid backslapping and handshakes with pamphlets being thrust into their hands as they made their way to the booths.

Biryani and tea made the rounds afterwards as old friends caught up on gossip and speculation on who would win. Polling started at 9am and ended at 5pm.
