Panic gripped the city after news spread of an attack on the prisons inspector general, Nusrat Mangan, on Lyari Expressway on Monday. However, nobody was hurt in the firing incident.
Unidentified persons opened fire at the IG's staff vehicle on Lyari Expressway near Essa Nagri. Mangan was not travelling in the vehicle, while his staff members were remained unhurt.
An extra contingent of law enforcers reached the site following the incident and collected evidence. Police officials said that they have recovered at least three empty shells of a pistol from the crime scene but no one saw the attackers.
Officials said that they were also trying to ascertain whether it was a targeted attack or merely stray bullets that hit the vehicle.
Gulshan-e-Iqbal SP, Abid Qaimkhani, said that the jail staff were using the vehicle illegally and that the incident occurred when they were on the way back from Hyderabad. Further investigation is underway, but no case has been registered as yet.
