KARACHI: Tension spread across parts of Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Sharae Faisal after a worker of the Awami National Party (ANP) was killed and another ANP activist’s mother and sister were injured in a separate attack.

A worker of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was gunned down and a shopkeeper was wounded when men opened fire on shopkeepers who refused to shut down in the affected localities.

Residents identified the ANP worker as 30-year-old Nadeem Raza. They said he was shot early Thursday morning near Rabia City.

ANP officials said the deceased was the ANP in-charge for their Rabia City ward.

Later, unidentified men opened fire on the mother and sister of Shahrukh, an ANP worker who was killed last year. The incident took place near Baitul Hina, when the two women were returning home from court. The mother, Bakhtawar Rasool, and sister, Sadia Gul, were moved to a hospital, where doctors said they were out of danger.

Following the incident, a group of men began to force businesses to close down. Witnesses said they opened fire at shopkeepers in Sher Mohammad Goth when the latter refused to go home. Dad Raheem Sanjrani, 32, was killed in the firing while another shopkeeper, Saleem, was injured. Residents said that the deceased used to run a puncture shop and was a PPP worker.
