Bar councils boycott court proceedings today
Lawyers protest ‘fake cases’ against Bahria Town attorneys.
ISLAMABAD:
Islamabad and Rawalpindi bar associations called a strike on Wednesday (today) over allegedly registering fake cases against the counsels of Bahria Town and harassing them.
The bar members will observe a complete boycott of the court proceedings.
Speaking to the media Islamabad Bar Association President Zahid Mahmood Raja said that the bar strongly condemned fabrication of cases against its members and will protest against it.
“A delegation of senior lawyers will meet police officers to have their protest recorded,” he added.
In case the police did not mend their ways, Raja said, the bar will expand the protest across the country and devise a future strategy. “The behaviour of police with lawyers was highly condemnable and if senior officers of police did not take necessary steps, the area of protest will be spread across the country.”
The bar president also said that verification of contents of an application forwarded to police also rests on the police and they should respect lawyers performing their professional duties.
Rawalpindi Bar Association Secretary Sajid Awan said that the bar members are being harassed and threatened.
“Lawyers will observe a strike to protest against involving bar members in fake cases,” he added.
The lawyers are being pressurised for not becoming the counsels of Bahria Town or other cases, he said, adding that obstructing lawyers from legal practice is illegal, non-constitutional and unethical. “The legal fraternity strongly condemned it,” he added.
