KARACHI: Police on Sunday claimed to have arrested a militant commander involved in Lyari gang war, saying he revealed Nabeel Gabol’s hand in creating unrest in the troubled neighbourhood.

“Ghaffar Zikri established links with Nabeel Gabol in recent past via mobile internet,” the DIG said, while referring to the suspect’s statement during initial interrogation.

Elaborating, he said, “Gabol asked Zikri to create disturbance and unrest in Lyari, assuring he will be provided with money, explosives and arms for the purpose,” adding he assured the militant a former UC nazim of Lyari will give him cash.

The suspect also confessed to have killed Rasheed alias tension, a militant of belonging to the Rehman Dakait group, and kidnapping and releasing a man for Rs5 million as ransom money, added the DIG.

However, according to Express News, Nabeel Gabol refuted the allegations leveled against him and termed them baseless.

Gabol was Pakistan People’s Party leader until March 2013 when he left the party to join the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). He also served as a member of the National Assembly from Lyari on PPP’s ticket.

During the 2013 general elections, the MQM awarded its most precious seat of NA-246, to Gabol. The constituency comprised areas which included the party’s headquarters -Nine Zero - and their strongholds of Liaquatabad and Federal B Area.

For the past couple of months, however, differences arose between the two which resulted in Gabol resigning as MNA as well as exiting from the party.
