QUETTA: Security and intelligence officials arrested nine Taliban militants following a shootout in the Kuchlak area of Balochistan on Thursday.

“Frontier Corps (FC) and intelligence officials carried out a search operation in Kuchlak after being tipped off on militant activity in the area,” an FC spokesman said. “Nine militants belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan were arrested following an exchange of fire. Weapons were recovered from their possession,” he told The Express Tribune.

The arrested men are being interrogated to obtain further information, the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, two commanders of a proscribed militant outfit laid down their arms before FC officials in Loralai district on Thursday.

“[Militant] commanders Mir Hazar Khan Marri and Hayder Mawali surrendered before FC authorities,” an FC spokesman said.  The ceremony was organised in the Balouwal area of Loralai and was attended by a large number of people in addition to FC officials, he added.

According to the spokesman, Marri and Mawal had been “in the mountains, fighting the state” and surrendered “for a better future.” He said they decided to lay down their arms due to the announcement of amnesty by the government.
