The Empire State Building was lit green in celebration of Eidul Fitr this year, a tradition dating back to 2007.

Since 1976 the iconic building has maintained a custom of changing colour to recognize various occasions and organizations through a display of fancy lights.

In 2007, the building's management said in a statement: "This is the first time that the Empire State Building will be illuminated for Eid, and the lighting will become an annual event in the same tradition of the yearly lightings for Christmas and Hannukah."

New York's tallest building already celebrates Christmas, Hannukah and St Patrick's Day by changing the colour scheme of its three tiers of night-time lights.
