ISLAMABAD:

Surveillance cameras aimed at enhancing security at federal educational institutes have yet to get installed even after six months since the APS massacre in Peshawar following which orders to enhance security were issued.

Though the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) recently ordered release of requisite funds to the educational institutes to get close-circuit cameras and other devices, most institutes have so far failed to get the cameras installed.

Earlier, tenders had been issued seeking bids from firms to get the security equipment installed at educational institutes but the tenders were later revoked. Later, it was also decided that the educational institutes would themselves install the surveillance cameras and other security equipment.

During a survey, it transpired that many of the institutes have yet to install the CCTV cameras.

Many educational institutes have no boundary walls and installation of security cameras will be a futile exercise unless the buildings were fully secured by constructing boundary walls.

Many students and teachers said they were exposed to several threats in the absence of boundary walls, security guards and CCTV cameras. When contacted, an official of the FDE said raids would be conducted to ensure that all education institutes had installed necessary security equipment. The official admitted that many schools were functioning without boundary walls.
