KARACHI:

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) issued on Tuesday show-cause notice to the police officer investigating the decade-old high-profile murder of jailor Amanullah Niazi and his aides.

Niazi, the then deputy superintendent of the city's central prison, was gunned down in an ambush near Mobile Market in Saddar in 2006 along with five others, including his brother, guard and driver.

The notice was issued to inspector Shahzad of the Preedy police station as he failed to ensure his presence during the court hearing and did not comply with orders. In the previous hearing, the ATC-IX had asked the investigation officer (IO) to initiate proceedings of proclamation and property attachment against the absconding suspects in the case and submit a report. Three suspects, identified as Chaudhry Sajjad, Tanveer Chand and Ubaid Khursheed alias K2 - all Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) workers - have been indicted in the murder case along with around a dozen absconding accomplices.

While issuing the notice, ATC-IX judge Farman Ali Kanasro directed the IO to explain his absence from the hearing on the next hearing on July 2.
