LAHORE: An overwhelming majority ( 96.7%) of the 6,123 used counterfoils having invalid CNIC numbers in the NA-122 constituency can be considered valid voters, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) said its report to the election tribunal on Saturday.

The tribunal, headed by Justice (retd) Kazim Ali Malik, was hearing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan’s election petition, challenging the election of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s leader Sardar Ayaz Sadiq from NA-122 constituency.

NADRA, in a 1475-page supplementary report, claimed that it carried out an analysis of the 6,123 used counterfoils having invalid CNIC numbers on a respondent counsel’s query and found that a majority of the same were “mistakes in writing down the CNIC number”.

“The process of writing down identity card numbers on counterfoils is manual activity and subject to human error. We studied a sample of counterfoils having invalid CNIC number and observed that an overwhelming majority of these were minor mistakes in writing down the number, which had rendered an otherwise valid number into an invalid one,” the report added.

The report said statistical expectation was that 96.7 per cent of the 6,123 could be considered as valid voters. “Therefore, the (expected) number of counterfoils bearing invalid CNIC numbers that could not be shown as valid voters was only 204,” it said.

The court, handing over copies of the supplementary report to the parties, adjourned the matter till June 13 and directed NADRA chief to appear at next hearing for recording his statement and cross examination.
