Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) has established a pilot Geographical Information System (GIS) cell to help manage local government elections. Initially, this will be initiated in Karak and Haripur.
“This is the first time that the district administrations of Haripur and Karak will use GIS mapping technology for elections,” read a statement issued from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf K-P headquarters. GIS mapping will help identify polling stations for village and neighbourhood Councils in the two districts. In addition, the handout added, GIS will also help manage route plans.
GIS can improve governance results at decentralized levels and help manage elections for enhanced transparency and accountability, it stated. “Seeds have been sown in pilot districts in Haripur and Karak and will be extended to other parts of the province after assessing the benefits of the system.”
