KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has told the East zone DIG to evict the illegal tenants in the government flats at Landhi Railway Station.

The flats were built by the Sindh government for the families of Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) martyrs and government servants but have been occupied by encroachers. The CM directed the Sindh Reserve Police (SRP) to take possession of the 368 flats and ensure foolproof security of the area.

Some of the illegally occupied flats, which had not yet been allotted to PPP workers, will instead be provided to the families of Sindh Police martyrs, announced Shah, while presiding over a meeting at CM House on Monday.

Special assistant to the CM Waqar Mehdi, PPP district East president Raja Razak, Benazir Housing Cell chairperson Manzar Abbas, DIG East Munir Shaikh and other officers attended the meeting. Out of these 368 flats, only 155 had been allotted to families of PPP martyrs who lost their lives in the 2007 bomb blasts on October 18 and December 27, said Shah. Meanwhile, the remaining flats were kept reserved for the families of unidentified martyrs.

The chief minister directed Abbas to present the list of allottees and made it clear that, except for those with original allotment orders from the Sindh government, the tenants will be considered illegal and will be evacuated immediately.

He said that the Sindh Police has sacrificed many officers while fighting terrorism in the province, and now the Sindh government has decided to allot these remaining flats to the families of those police martyrs as a token of encouragement.

The Sindh government has also released huge amounts to the Sindh IG for the construction of flats within the boundaries of police stations to provide secure residential facilities to the Sindh Police, announced Shah. He urged that all requisite formalities be completed for construction to begin without further delays.
