KARACHI:

The provincial home department has formed a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the high-profile murder of the University of Karachi (KU) assistant professor, Dr Waheedur Rehman.

The professor, who taught at the varsity's mass communication department, was killed on April 29, when four unidentified men on two motorcycles opened fire on him near the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) in Federal B Area's Block 16.

The Yousuf Plaza police had registered an FIR, No 38/2015, against the unknown accused under sections 302/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association, however, demanded that the murder be investigated either by a judicial commission or a JIT.

"On the recommendation of the police additional inspector general [Ghulam Qadir Thebo], with reference to the letter dated May 18, 2015, a JIT [has been] constituted for the purpose of the investigation and interrogation in respect of the murder case," stated home secretary Abdul Kabir Kazi in a notification issued on May 21.

"The JIT [headed by West district's SSP Investigation II with representation from law enforcement, paramilitary and intelligence agencies] should investigate the matter in seven days and submit a report to [the home] department two days from the completion of the investigation," added Kazi.
