KARACHI: Expressing his firm determination to restore the standard of education in Karachi, President Mamnoon Hussain said education is on the list of his top priorities.

Addressing a function held for the distribution of laptops among 33 talented students of the NED University of Engineering and Technology on Wednesday, he said that the establishment of lasting peace, improvement of health services and welfare work were also among his priorities.

The laptops were distributed under the Prime Minister's Youth Laptop Programme at the NED University auditorium in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC). President Hussain lauded the programme and said the laptops will encourage students to further improve their skills and follow modern trends in education.

"We want to familiarise and harmonise our students with the changes in the region," he said. Hussain advised parents to introduce their children to new technology in order to develop their capacity and skills for playing their role in the development of the country. He said women form 50 per cent of the population of the country and they must get better education and excel in the profession of their choice. Hussain suggested that only female teachers should teach at the primary level, as it would convince those parents to send their female children to school, who oppose the co-education system.

Presenting the welcome address, NED University vice-chancellor Dr Muhammad Afzal Haq expressed his gratitude to President Hussain for gracing the ceremony with his presence as the chief guest. He said that the unflinching support of the President for the development of education will greatly benefit the sector. NED University is producing professionals, engineers, planners and architects and many of them have ventured to other parts of the globe, according to Haq. He said NED University is striving to provide professional quality education as a service to the nation.
