LAHORE:
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Monday the government would procure four million tonnes of wheat this year and that small farmers were being given priority in this regard.
He was addressing a meeting at Civil Secretariat through video link.
The chief minister said best possible facilities were being provided to farmers at procurement centres. “I am monitoring the procurement campaign. We are making sure that farmers get due returns for their produce,” he said. Sharif said no “middleman” would be allowed to exploit farmers. He said the government had taken a number of steps for the welfare of the poor. Such measures will help improve the standard of living. He said public schemes, including Metro Bus Service, the educational endowment fund, Daanish Schools and the Ashiana housing scheme, had been benefitting the poor. He said the government had set up the Punjab Social Protection Authority to manage all social welfare programmes under one roof. “Serving people is the government’s mission. It will continue to work for the people’s welfare in its entire tenure in power,” the chief minister said. He said billions of rupees was being spent on bringing the poor into the national mainstream.
Provincial Ministers Raja Ashfaq Sarwar, Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, Bilal Yasin, Muhammad Shafiq, Haroon Sultan, Adviser to Chief Minister on Health Khwaja Salman Rafique, MPA Ayesha Ghaus Pasha and the additional chief secretary attended the meeting.
Economy
The chief minister said the government’s economic polices had helped strengthen national economy and attract foreign investment. He said self-reliance was the key to independence. He said the government’s policy of promoting economic activity had yielded satisfactory results.
Sharif was speaking to parliamentarians from Bhakkar. They included Senator Muhammad Zafarullah Khan Dhandla, MNA Afzal Dhandla, MPA Ghazanfar Abbas and Inamullah Khan Niazi.
The chief minister said terrorism and energy crisis had affected education, health, agriculture and industry in the country. He said the government was doing its best to overcome the energy crisis. He said of the $46 billion investment agreements signed with China recently, $20 billion projects were in energy sector. He said Chinese investment would bring about prosperity.
