LAHORE: Lahore Zoo has received four lambs of urial breed from the Wildlife Department, Zoo spokesperson Dr Baber Saleem told the APP on Friday. He said the lambs had been recovered from the illegal possession of poachers by a Wildlife Department team. He said 120 chicks of rare pheasant and peafowl breeds were born at the zoo during the current season. He said these included ring-necked and white pheasants, black-shoulder, white and Indian peafowl. Education Officer Kiran said breeding was done in controlled environment at the zoo. She said artificial brooders were used during hatching phase. She said the diet of the chicks for the first 25 to 35 days included electrolytes/glucose and water supplemented with amino acids. “They are kept in separate enclosures protected with green shades and mud-covered roofs,” she added. Lahore Zoo is a member of the South Asian Zoo Association for Regional Cooperation (SAZARC) formed in 2000 to set standards for animal care, organise staff trainings and to improve cooperation amongst various zoological gardens in the region.
