In court: Two KE workers remanded to police custody
They were accused of killing a policeman and injuring another during a robbery
KARACHI:
Two employees of K-Electric (KE) were remanded by an anti-terrorism court on Tuesday on charges of killing a policeman and injuring another during a robbery.
Noman and Wajid, both workers at the city's sole power utility, were arrested by the police two days ago. According to the prosecution, the suspects, using a KE vehicle, were cutting electric wires from poles in Site in order to sell them illegally. However, they were intercepted by two police constables, Adil Nawaz and Sadaqat, who asked them what they were doing.
The suspects opened fire at the law enforcers, killing Nawaz on the spot and injuring Sadaqat. The suspects, while fleeing, also took an official sub-machine gun belonging to one of the policemen. They were soon nabbed by the police, who seized the stolen gun as well as the pistol used to fire at the policemen.
KE denied that the suspects were workers of the utility. Talking to The Express Tribune, a spokesperson said that the suspects were actually hired by a contractor, not by the utility directly. "The power utility company has no links with the arrested suspects."
The police told the ATC-II judge that at least four suspects were absconding in the case, adding that Noman and Wajid had to be interrogated to find their accomplices. Granting the police's request, the judge sent the suspects to police custody on physical remand till May 12.
A case has been registered against the suspects at the Site-B police station under sections 302, 396, 324 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, read with section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. Two separate cases have also been registered against them for possessing illicit weapons under section 23(1)a of the Sindh Arms Act.
