Noted artists and friends express their shock and dismay at the loss of Sabeen Mahmud, known to be an unparalleled institution for the city’s literary sphere. Here’s what they have to say.

Musician Aamir Zaki

“They are selectively killing the selective few, the ones who stood for something enlightening. After Sabeen, I don’t know who will stand for artists

Mad School owner Nida Butt

“RIP, Sabeen. Those words are not needed for her, indeed, she will rest in peace. It is us who are put to the test now. Sabeen, you did your part very well

Writer Asif Farrukhi

“It’s my personal loss. I have lost a very dear friend. T2F was a place where I planned out my new ventures and it was here we used to dream big. I feel Karachi has lost its part or, maybe, its dream. Horror has come home

Zambeel Dramatic Readings founder Asma Mundrawala

“Sabeen provided the city with a space for artistic expression. A place that artists connected with for discourse and dialogue. Moreover, her faith in the artist community gave strength to numerous practitioners. Her loss is irreparable and has left a void for us all. One has no words to express grief and shock. But all we can do is believe that ‘Chalay chalo ke woh manzil abhi nahi ayee

Comedian Saad Haroon

“I am utterly heartbroken. Today, I lost someone I considered a sister. Even if you never met her, please know that Sabeen Mahmud fought for you... for your rights and freedoms, your art and culture. Without her, our time on this earth is less valuable. I wonder who will watch over us now. RIP

Singer Zoe Viccaji

“She was one of the sweetest people we knew and someone who truly cared and felt everyone’s concerns deeply. I’m so saddened by this numbing news. I can only hope that everything she worked to build all these years does not come crumbling down. I know I do not have the guts to push forward the issue that she lost her life over, but T2F must go on is my immediate thought. It’s the least that we can and must do

Nasreen Ghani | 8 years ago | Reply Recently there has been target killing of women in Karachi, but there is silence with the authorities that are meant to protect all the citizens of Karachi, we are supposed to have all kinds of security but yet these monsters are able to penetrate, and accompany their sick mission to snuff out best in our world, when will this end when can we feel protected ?
