KARACHI:

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) sentenced on Monday three militants belonging to banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi to 14 years in jail after convicting them for possessing explosive substances.

Syed Ahmed Hasan alias Muavia, Naeem alias Khan and Saud Altaf were arrested by the Crime Investigation Department (now the Counter Terrorism Department) in October last year. The investigation officer claimed that they had been planning militant activity when the police, acting on a tip-off, arrested them from Rashid Minhas Road. He added that each of them was carrying a hand grenade. They were booked under Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.

The ATC-I judge, Bashir Ahmed Khoso, decided the fate of the suspects in a relatively quick trial of six months. The men had pleaded to the court that they were falsely implicated in the case but were unable to prove their claim. They were each sent to jail for a sentence of 14 years under Section 7(ff) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.
