Natural resources: ‘Underground water will be preserved’

LAHORE: The government is preparing a policy to protect and preserve underground water resources in the province, a senior official from the Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA) said on Sunday. He said the policy aimed at ensuring efficient use of water resource. He said the government had sought proposals from water experts for maintaining quality of underground water.  Scientists of the Irrigation Research Institute would be requested to send their research papers and recommendations in this regard, he said. The official said the department was collecting water samples from various places to check its quality. He said underground water was being used for irrigation in most areas of the province. The government, he said, was making efforts to increase the use of canal water for the purpose.
