KARACHI:
A 26-year-old man, who self-immolated on Monday, died in Karachi on Thursday morning at Civil Hospital, Karachi.
The body of the deceased, A*, was taken to his native town in Badin where he was buried in the evening. He leaves behind a wife and a two-year-old son.
He attempted to kill himself at the residence of his in-laws in the Kario Ghanwar village, situated 40 kilometres from Badin. According to relatives and neighbours, A was jobless. He was taken to a local hospital in the village where there was no ambulance to take him to the Golarchi Taluka Hospital. "He was crying with pain in [the local] hospital for more than three hours," said a resident, Mohammad Ayaz.
According to Dr Shamo Mal of Kario Ghanwar Hospital, A's body was burnt up to 80 per cent. He was then taken to Civil Hospital, Hyderabad, but was referred to Karachi's Civil hospital due to lack of burns wards. He succumbed to his injuries early Thursday morning.
Unfortunately, the district hospitals in interior Sindh are only equipped with first-aid facilities for burn victims. All such patients are referred to Civil Hospital, Karachi. In his statement to the police and media during treatment, A said the reason of the suicide was unemployment.
According to Ayaz, unemployment was the main reason that he was unable to live with his family anywhere.
The father's version
According to A's father, he used to work as a labourer in Kario Ghanwar, Badin and Karachi.
"He was in Karachi with his son and wife two weeks back," said the aggrieved father who had stayed with his dying son during the last three days of his life. "My son bought clothes and other items for his wife and son. They also attended a wedding ceremony in Kario Ghanwar. Why did he kill himself then? I want to know the reason of his suicide."
