Model Town Riots: LHC to hear Gullu Butt’s bail plea

Butt had requested the court to suspend an 11-year imprisonment

LAHORE:
Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday removed the registrar’s office objection to a bail application moved by Shahid alias Gullu Butt accused of vandalising public property during last year’s riots in Model Town. The court fixed the plea for hearing. Butt had requested the court to suspend an 11-year imprisonment awarded to him by an anti-terrorism court in October 2014. His counsel submitted that police had implicated him in the case under political pressure. He said there was sufficient evidence to exonerate him from the charges. The lawyer said Butt’s plea was unlikely to be fixed for hearing in the near future; therefore he might be granted bail until the matter was decided. The registrar’s office had objected to this saying that Butt did not deserve bail at this stage. The judge has now ordered the office to fix the application before an appropriate bench.
