ISLAMABAD:

Stage is all set to enthrall the nation at Pakistan Day parade as all preparations and security measures have been completed for a joint military parade of Pakistan’s armed forces taking place after seven years, it emerged on Sunday.

Security was kept on high alert in Rawalpindi and Islamabad before the March 23 parade slated to be held today at the newly constructed Parade Ground near Faizabad Interchange in the capital. Police officials confirmed that mobile phone service will remain suspended in the twin cities during the parade.

The last military parade took place on March 23, 2008 during the tenure of Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf as a civilian president.

In response to a question regarding media reports that China’s President Xi Jinping will attend the 23rd March ceremony as a chief guest, the Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said the Chinese president’s visit will take place in the near future.

“As has been our practice, the schedule of the visit will be announced simultaneously in Islamabad and Beijing,” she said, adding that we have not reached that stage yet.

“We have already clarified the position in response to speculations. We do not have the practice of inviting foreign dignitaries at the 23rd March parade,” Aslam said.

Full dress rehearsal of the parade was held on Saturday at the newly constructed Parade Ground near Faizabad Interchange, state-broadcaster PTV News reported.

Special Services Group of Pakistan Army enthralled the environment with the slogans of "Allah Hu" whereas female contingent was also exceptional while paying tribute.

Commandos of Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy and Frontier Constabulary conducted march-past in their unique style whereas Pakistan Air Force carried out an honorific flypast.

Mechanised Infantry Unit, Light Infantry Commando battalion, Pakistan Army aviation helicopters Bell Helly, MI-17, Cobra gunship helicopter, Puma helicopters also flew before the podium.

Floats were also presented to highlight the culture of the four provinces on which regional dance and cultural melodies were played.

Security

Before the show of strength by the armed forces, security has been beefed up in Rawalpindi and Islamabad by setting up checkpoints on different places and deploying personnel of the law enforcement agencies.

All the main arteries entering the parade avenue will remain closed for traffic. Murree Road, linking Rawalpindi to Islamabad, will also be sealed.
