ISLAMABAD: Beaconhouse School System hosted a colourful Model United Nations (MUN) conference at its Margalla Campus.

Various branches of the school along with teams from Headstart and Lahore Grammar School participated in the conference. The opening ceremony that took place on Friday was a grand affair where students representing various countries put up stalls. Starting off with the Global Village, the event turned out to be an exciting one, where the students tried to capture cultures and regional significance of different countries.

The main courtyard of the campus was full of life as everyone got ready for the opening ceremony. Eccentric handmade and improvised costumes flared the surroundings. From Egypt to Switzerland, every country took on the colours of their region and indigenous delicacies from the assigned areas were also prepared.

The opening ceremony included speeches from the secretary general, director general and the chief guest, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Malik Emmad Ali Khan.

The night progressed with a wonderful cultural ramp walk, where two representatives wearing the native clothes of their respective countries walked the ramp representing the cultures of the assigned countries.  The crowd consisting of 400 student delegates was enthralled by the performance and swayed to the beat of fun music while seeing their friends catwalk in ‘queer’ outfits.

Everyone enjoyed the evening, visiting different stalls and munching on exotic foods that had been prepared for the occasion. The evening was a successful start for the three-day conference including committee sessions and other social events.

The motto of this conference is ‘Seek. Strive. Succeed.’ The delegates were divided into seven committees such as counter-terrorism committee, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Development Fund for Women and Indo-Pak Summit, to name a few. Issues scheduled to be discussed during the course of the conference include the war on terrorism, food crisis, human trafficking, Kashmir issue and the feminisation
of poverty.

The students had toiled hard to make this event happen. Sana Viqar, director general for the conference said, “It has been a wonderful experience from the start and a great collaboration with the Boys Branch from the very beginning. With the support of each other, we have made this
event happen.”

Mehmood Iqbal Chaudhry, secretary general, while speaking about the difficulties faced while organising the event, said, “There were times when I thought we would never be able to pull this off. We had technical issues and administrative issues but with the support of our school we were able to pull it off in a great fashion.”

Beaconhouse School System is looking forward to hosting a great Model United Nations conference and along the way hopes to come up with constructive resolutions to solve international issues.
