KARACHI: A district and sessions court sentenced on Monday three men to two years in prison on different charges of attempted murder, assault on public servant and possession of illicit weapons.

Shoaib alias Shabay and Ghulam Farid were found guilty of attacking policemen with the intention to kill. They were arrested by the Site B police on January 19, 2013, from Shershah Chowk after an encounter. According to the prosecution, the convicts were roaming in the area and opened fire at the police, who retaliated and arrested them. An unlicensed 32 bore pistol was also seized from Farid.

The additional district and sessions judge III of District West, Zahida Sikandar, sent them to a collective four years in jail. They were sentenced to two years in jail under Section 353 (assaulting public servant) and another two years under Section 324 (attempting to murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The judge observed in her order that the sentences shall run concurrently, which means that they will serve a total of two years in prison. They were also given the benefit of Section 382-B of the Criminal Procedure Code, which allows the period already served in prison to be counted in their sentence.

Separately, the same court sentenced Tajrab Khan alias Pappu to two years in prison for possessing an illicit weapon. He was arrested by the Crime Investigation Department (now Counter Terrorism Department) on November 25, 2014, from Labour Square area. The case against him was registered under Section 23(1)(a) of the Sindh Arms Act.
