HYDERABAD:

The movement for the freedom of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani citizen serving sentence in the United States over various charges, has pinned its hopes on the army chief, Gen Raheel Sharif.

A national jirga was held at Hyderabad Press Club on Friday. Speakers called for raising the issue of Siddiqui’s release on international forums. They also reminded Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of his pre-election promises to press for her release. Siddiqui was arrested in July 2008 from Ghazni, Afghanistan. She is currently serving her 86-year sentence at a facility in Texas.
